“She did WHAT?!?!”

Eve’s response to what Haley had done was lighter hearted than I would have expected. She feigned being scandalized by the whole thing, but made it clear that she wasn’t mad. That surprised me. Eve was on the other end of the phone. I had called her immediately after I had found out.

“Why would I be mad?” she asked. And it was a fair question. It’s not like I had asked Haley to spy on me while I was getting down to business. It’s not like I had even known. And yet, it seemed to me like it was exactly the kind of thing that would lead to a fight. The relief I felt was palpable.

“So how do you feel about it?” Eve flipped it around on me.

“Umm,” I stalled for time. It was a good question. And I honestly hadn’t spent too much time sorting through it. How did I feel?

On the one hand, I felt violated. Certainly, my privacy had been at least. I expected to feel more angry or even upset by the whole thing, but that didn’t seem to materialize. That was interesting.

“I don’t know exactly,” I said. It felt like a safe answer. At least it was an honest one. “I guess I’m a little annoyed by it. What did she think she was doing watching me like that? Why did she think it was okay?”

“Just a little annoyed?” Eve’s voice was neutral. “Anything else?”

“What do you mean?” I felt my defenses rise. The question felt like an accusation.

“Is she cute?” Eve asked. The casual tone to the question was too contrived to be authentic.

“I mean…” What did I mean? Obviously, Haley was cute. I could lie about that, but in the modern world of social media, it wasn’t like there was no risk there. How hard would it be for Eve to find a picture of Haley if she got curious? And then I would be up the creek without a paddle, because…well, obviously Haley was cute. And more than that, she was freaking hot. “She’s not exactly hard to look at.”

My stomach was twisted in knots as I waited for Eve to speak. The silence from the other end of the line was deafening as it stretched. For a moment, I thought that the call might have disconnected.

Eve laughed. “I knew it! Oh, I just tell you in your voice that this wasn’t just about you being upset about it. It got you a little excited, didn’t it?”

I was surprised how quickly she had me pegged. She was right, of course. And it felt like there was little point in lying if it had all been that obvious to her.

“Maybe.”

“It’s totally okay!” Eve said and the words melted the tension in my shoulders. “It sounds fucking hot.”

I don’t know what exactly I expected her to say, but it certainly had not been that.

“Hot?” I repeated it back to her as a question, more to make sure I had heard her right than anything else.
